God was not on Mt Sinai

The character of God in the Old Testament and the character of God in the New Testament as revealed in Christ and by Christ are completely different. In the Old Testament, God was judgmental. He killed people at the least provocation because of sin especially those who did not live up to His commands and demands. However, in the New Testament, He is gracious and merciful. He loves sinners and has readily forgiven us in Christ through the finished work of Christ on the cross. Question: Is the God of the New Testament the same as the God of the Old Testament? Was it the same God on Mt Sinai who commanded 3000 people to be slaughtered at the foot of the mountain because of sin?
